The UK’s membership of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) is due for renewal in 2018. The UK IODP team would like to ensure future UK participation in international scientific ocean drilling, including support for UK scientists to continue to take part in and play leading roles in the programme. To do this effectively we need strong, objective evidence of the value and opportunities that will be available only through our continued national membership of IODP. This is essential to ensure future support for programme subscriptions, travel to and from IODP Expeditions and meetings, post cruise research, site survey experiments, national and thematic meetings, workshops, summer schools, knowledge exchange, and engagements with industry and policy makers. The UK IODP community must therefore provide detailed evidence of our participation in ocean drilling, our outputs, and their impact since 2010. With this survey we would like to document both your direct interactions with IODP such as cruise participation, but also your research, proposals and publications that make use of samples, data or knowledge resulting from scientific ocean drilling.
This survey is being conducted on behalf of the UK IODP Programme Advisory Group (PAG; chaired by Professor Damon Teagle), who are tasked with advising NERC, via the Science Coordinator and the Programme Executive Board on the delivery of the programme. The responses to this survey will be used by the PAG as supporting evidence in a report to be submitted to an external panel set up by NERC to evaluate the UK subscription to IODP.
Participation in this survey is voluntary, and it should take ~30 minutes to complete, unless you are very IODP-active, in which case it will take longer (you may send additional information via email if easier). Please note, that although this survey is anonymous, you may be identifiable from your responses to some questions (e.g., details of your publications and grant applications). You should therefore only include information from which you may be identified, if you are happy to do so. If you would like to withdraw your data at anytime, please contact UK IODP (email@example.com).
Any personal data captured from responses to the survey will be held and processed in line with UK Data Protection Act (1998) as set out in the NERC Information notice (http://www.nerc.ac.uk/about/policy/foi/information/). This information will not be used for marketing purposes without your consent.
We are grateful to you for completing this survey and please encourage other colleagues, especially those not directly engaged in scientific ocean drilling, to complete the survey. The survey will close on January 26, 2018. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to receive a copy of the (anonymised) results of this survey, or if you have any other questions or suggestions.
